How does playtest really work?

So when I first clicked on playtest I thought there was going to be another deck that I was going to play against but I was wrong. How does this exactly work?

You just play against yourself. It's good for telling if your deck is consistent or not. You can also use the playtest feature of another deck in another tab of your internet browser and play two decks at the same time.

This site doesn't mock up games between decks. That would require some very advanced AI programming and potential lawsuits with WOTC.

The olaytester allows you to "goldfish" your deck, or test how it might play against an opponent who doesn't interact with you at all. It's good for testing your deck's mana curve, land base, and other factors.

I personally use the feature to test a paper deck at my desk. I pull up the opponent's deck on playtest, then pilot my paper deck at the same time. It's a bit inaccurate because you get to see your opponent's hand the whole game and inadvertently play around counterspells or whatnot, but it's fine if you're on your own for testing.

The way to sidestep that issue (and test your skills as a player) is to try to win with both decks. Identify and make the optimal play based only on what you would normally know about the other deck.
