First time posting here so not sure if this is proper formatting or way to go about this but here it goes. My father and I used to play MTG when I was younger from about 6th grade until I left for college out of state off an on when I saw him. I would play every once in a while with decks that he had laying around when I would come back into town to visit. A little while ago my father had to be placed into a nursing home and no longer has the mental capability to play. Since I was the only one in the family that knew how to play his cards were passed down to me. I have recently stating again with some new people that I have met and I am having a great time doing so. I have mostly been playing with their decks to stay competitive while I worked on something on my own. A few of issues that I am having is that I come from a background of strictly 1 vs 1 playing to now playing multiplayer games with sometimes up to 6 to 8 people and I am still very new to deck building. I have gone through the cards that were passed down to me as well as a few singles i have bought to make of cards that I would like to try and play with. I am having issues coming up with the amount of land cards vs nonland cards as well as the number of each card I should include to make up the final product. I'm not sure how many cards the actual deck should be since it is so many other players at one time. Some of the people are still using 60 card decks and they very in size up to one that is 200 so i'm not sure where I should really be at. Any feedback in that could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. If anything that is glaring mistake to include or something cheap that I would be missing would be great to know as well. Thank you in advance for your input!!!

Tell us more about the kinds of decks you are playing with. Is there anything you've seen that interests you?

It sounds like a pretty casual group if some of the decks are 200 cards. Most mainstream formats come in 3 sizes: 40 for prerelease, 100 for Commander, and 60 for other major formats. Casual allows for a lot of freedom in how you build and in the level of competitiveness, because it really heavily depends on the people you are playing with.

If you build a good streamlined 60 card deck, you'll mop the floor against those very unpredictable 200 card decks. Don't worry about running out of cards before they do. The game should be done long before then. :) A very basic way to break your 60 cards down is as follows: 18 Creatures, 18 Others, 24 Lands. There are always exceptions, but that will give you a good place to start from.

Now, some simple cards to consider for multi-player games are cards that specifically hit "opponents" rather than "target opponent/player" so that you can hit them all at once rather than just a single opponent. A good example is the Extort mechanic, which is exponentially more effective in multi=player vs 1v1 games.

Anyways, I'll keep this short. Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope this helps you out a little bit!
