WotC and Advertising

Does anybody have any idea why WotC doesn't do advertisements on their PT and GP coverage? They only ever self-advertise. Same with ad cards in booster packs. On the flip side, they never seem to advertise outside of MTG product and let word of mouth spread the knowledge of their wonderful creations. Thoughts?

I think this is at least one thing they do right. By not advertising they let the product and users of it speak for themselves, really only ever showing you that there are events going on. I also think that perhaps they don't want to clog the experience and actually value us all, not to mention that running a GP is all the advertising and sales increase they need. just by showing the event and letting the hype train ride they're able to stir up SO much commotion and want for their product.

@DERPLINGSUPREME: I was thinking along the same lines. WotC did run a commercial once called Bob From Accounting, you should look it up.

Some of the old tv commercials were amazing lmfao. During the Starter 1999 phase (?)

It's true where I see a lot of targeted advertising from mtg vendors online; because I already browse tcg sites. Someone outside of social circles might not ever hear about magic at all

I don't really talk about it w people who don't play. 90% of my friends don't know I currently play mtg. I might not be aware that someone has a collection because it's just not brought up without a reference.

Once someone introduces you to mtg, it's your choice how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole. As people learn and buy more they each have a different experience. Mtg either grabs you or it doesn't

That is an interesting point you make there. I don't know if it is necessarily a smart one (though they pay people with experience to judge that). The only way I found out about mtg was from a friend. Without them I would never have picked up this game or even known it existed. Maybe it isn't right to not advertise the the general public? Or maybe they don't want the mainstream attention?

@sirbar maybe they don't want toxic idiots polluting the fanbase. Seriously, there's a lot of people who are just dicks for no reason.

DERPLINGSUPREME oh trust me I know, but that was not what I was referring to. I was more talking about how they got into trouble for putting satanic images on there cards like with Unholy Strength and criticisms that the color wheel represented a pentagram.

yes. People who are being dicks for no reason. You don't get mad at Alexandros of Antioch for creating the Venus de Milo and it, lets say, exposing children to nudity.
