August Reflections —Aug. 31, 2017

Cuts:

  • Aura of Silence - This card is actually really good against other stax decks and mana-rock dependent decks. It's also nice as a way to turn Enlightened Tutor into a Disenchant. That said, my meta is too dork heavy to support this as a stax piece.
  • Eidolon of Rhetoric - The Zur deck in my meta switched to stax and the meta has far more reanimator / flash hulk than storm now. Really sad to see this bear go, but meta adaptations are really important for stax.

Adds:

  • Thorn of Amethyst - Now that Crop Rotation is in, getting Ancient Tomb to enable T1 Thorn is far more likely, so this card is back in.
  • Hushwing Gryff - Shaper's playing Razakats and this is a secondary stax piece that helps deal with Leonin Relic-Warder. This might be better as Torpor Orb, but I'm keeping the creature for flash plays for now.

Potential Changes:

  • Banisher Priest -> Fiend Hunter. More people in the meta are running Elesh Norn, so surviving Norn might be more important than being fetchable off Recruiter of the Guard now. I'm also considering cutting Recruiter for something like Sylvan Tutor, so this change might be fairy likely to happen.

Why isn't Joraga Treespeaker mentioned in the ramp section? I understand that she is probably worse (generally) than any of the other one-mana dorks, but wouldn't she at least be preferable to the two-mana rocks in a deck with stony silence and potentially null rod? I'm just curious.

Joraga Treespeaker is a bit weak for competitive EDH. She is somewhat comparable to a Worn Powerstone with the upside of being able to spread the startup mana over two turns. If people are looking to make replacements to some cards in the deck, it's reasonable to cut Stony Silence and Null Rod if more mana rocks are being run. I suppose she might find a mention - I might put her in the maybe section for ramp.
