"You are a curious young fellow, aren't you? I would gladly have you as a student! The Mending is the most important period of our multiverse's history, though only a few actually know this. Back in the days, planeswalkers were godlike entities, with not only the power to planeswalk between worlds, but they were immortal, immaterial, and possessed the power to create and destroy entire planes on a whim. It was one of them, Urza, who had been responsible for the Time Rifts that threatened the multiverse. So a large group of planeswalkers gathered and sacrificed their lives - and powers - to mend the Rifts, to repair the multiverse. They saved us all. But the price they paid was terrible: the very nature of the planeswalker Spark was forever altered, diminished to a fraction of what it was. Since The Mending, every planeswalker throughout the multiverse has become mortal.
- So it is true? Ancient planeswalkers were really gods?
- Yes. An ancient race of gods with unimaginable powers. The Mending made them little more than mortals, allowing them to retain only their ability to planeswalk and a tiny fraction of their original powers... Do not be fooled, though. Modern planeswalkers are still capable entities."
