Wither with first strike?

Asked by MTGJustice 11 years ago

Lets say i am attacking with a 4/4 creature with wither and first strike and my creature is blocked by a regular 6/6 creature. How would damage be calculated? Would the -1/-1 counters be applied before the blocking creature dealt damage? would my creature live? thank you.

Since you're attacking with a creature that has first strike, your creature would deal damage during the first strike damage phase, hitting the 6/6 for 4. Wither then replaces that damage with 4 -1/-1 counters, putting the 6/6 down to a 2/2. Then your opponent's creature would deal damage to your creature, which is now 2. So your creature would survive.

NOTE: Without first strike, your creature would die and your opponent would be left with a 6/6 with 4 -1/-1 counters on it.
