Will detaining a permanent prevent lands and other mana abilities?
Asked by nickiru 10 years ago
Example: I detain my opponents land at the beginning of their upkeep. Are they still able to tap it for mana after the detaining ability resolves?

It's worth noting that I couldn't find any Detain effects that can target lands. That said...
Detain prevents use of mana abilities. From Gatherer:
Activated abilities include a colon and are written in the form [cost]: [effect]. No one can activate any activated abilities, including mana abilities, of a detained permanent.

@FancyTuesday: Many detain effects target creatures, so they can target animated lands.
@nickiru: Again, the Gatherer rulings state:
4/15/2013: Activated abilities include a colon and are written in the form [cost]: [effect]. No one can activate any activated abilities, including mana abilities, of a detained permanent.
Triggered abilities still work, but you can't activate any of the detained permanent's activated abilities, no matter what they are.

Sorry...
May I get a yes or no answer? Thnks.
Will it prevent a land from being tapped? Yes or no?

Yes. The bold, underlined text explains why, but the answer is yes.

Yes. Tapping the land is part of the cost to activate its ability. You can't activate the ability. Therefore, you can't tap the land.

Detain prevents the permanent's activated abilities from being activated. It doesn't limit this statement, so it prevents all activated abilities from being activated.
Always check Gatherer before asking a question.
