What zones does Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord's last ability work?

Asked by Vidise_Crimson 11 years ago

Say I wanted a forest and a swamp in my graveyard but the only way to accomplish that endeavor would be to put the ones that I currently have in play, would it be possible to sacrifice the two lands and still keep Jarad in play and not have to put him back in my hand? O does his ability only work in the graveyard?

Only the graveyard. When an ability moves the permanent it's on from one zone to another, it only functions while in the first zone.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord Use double brackets to link cards in your question.

Jarad's last ability will only do what it says on the card, moving him from the graveyard to your hand. If he's not in the graveyard, you can't use the ability.

lol billpasdmf I was thinking to myself what zone could he possibly be in (other than the graveyard) where you could move him from your graveyard to your hand. It's kind of tough to move something from your graveyard to your hand if it's somewhere other than your graveyard. Although that would be sweet if you could do it and he moved from your library to your graveyard automatically and then to your hand as part of the effect lol. Totally broken, but pretty awesome.

abenz419 Heh. Well, Magic has a very regimented structure, using very specific language to facilitate its moving parts. It can take some time to get used to. Stranger questions have been asked, as I'm sure you're aware.

And yes, that effect would be awesomelly broken. It would have to have one of those "win this turn or lose the game" stipulations to make it fair. lol

Because you see the thing is, A level 1 judge says that it is a cost which can be paid and I would not get any effect but I can pay the cost at time i could activate the ability. and the ability doesn't state what zone it must be in for it to be activated. Also there was the fact that you couldn't activate his last ability while in the graveyard. that the ability would be only good to get a another Jarad from your graveyard to put into your hand. Example: you have a Jarad in play and another one in the graveyard, you might get your graveyard wiped or you might lose the one in play so you pay the cost to return the GY one back in your hand so you can cast it again when the time is right if you lose the one in play.

@Vidise_Crimson whenever a card references it's own name in the text like Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord does in his last ability, it's literally the exact same thing as saying "this card right here". So, when it says "Sacrifice a Swamp and a Forest: return Jarad from your graveyard to your hand" its actually saying "sacrifice a Swamp and a Forest: return this card right here from your graveyard to your hand".

If the ability were used to put a second Jarad from your graveyard to your hand then it would be worded "Sacrifice a Swamp and a Forest: return a card named Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord from your graveyard to your hand". That little bit that was added in, "a card named", makes it reference any card named Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and not just itself.
