What happens with double strike and curse of stalked prey?

Wouldn't it be that because of double strike that they deal combat damage twice and therefore gain the +1,+1 twice or is the first strike actually considered its own type of damage so that it doesn't gain the boost from the first hit?

Curse of Stalked Prey says every time a creature deals damage to the cursed player. A double strike creature deals damage twice, thus benefit doubly from the curse and getting two +1/+1 counters.

A 2/2 with double strike will deal 2 damage in the first damage step, gain a +1/+1 counter, then deal 3 damage in the second damage step then gain another +1/+1 counter.
