Thundermaw Hellkite

Asked by abdulbaqr 12 years ago

Ok, i read the rulings on the gatherer page, so i get that the tap part of the Thundermaw Hellkite is going to happen. My inclination is to say that even if the creatures that your opponent has are hexproof/protection from red/shrouded that the 1 damage will still happen since there isn't a targeting happening, it just hits each creature. obviously in the pro red example the 1 dmg goes to 0 but it still gets tapped. Can someone sanity check this for me? I'm pretty sure i'm right, but it's nice to get confirmation.

Correct.

A spell or ability only targets if it uses the word target. Since Thundermaw Hellkite 's ability doesn't say target, it affects creatures with hexproof or shroud.

Protection stops five things: damage, enchanting, equipping, blocking, and targeting. Therefore, a creature with protection from red will not take any damage from Thundermaw Hellkite 's ability (because the damage will be prevented), but it will still be tapped because the tapping portion of the effect is not dependent on the damage and doesn't violate any clauses of protection.

You are correct. Even those creatures he or she has that have hexproof or shroud will still take one damage and be tapped since there is no targeting going on.
