Thassa's Rebuff and Killing a Creature

Lets say I have 3 creatures that each have U in there mana cost. So my devotion is therefore 3. let's say that my opponent plays a card that I want to counter. I play Thassa's Rebuff to counter it. In response, my opponent plays a spell to kill one of my creatures. Will Thassa's Rebuff's "unless they pay X'' cost become 2 or will it stay at 3?
