Swift Reckoning

If my opponent declares an attacker, of course causing him to tap it, can I use Swift Reckoning to destroy it before damage is dealt?
Also...did I do that card thingy correctly?
Baring Vigilance, any tapped creatures will be destroyed before damage is dealt then?

To clarify what BlueScope said: combat damage happens in its own separate step of the combat phase. If you destroy the creature before the combat damage step then it won't be able to deal any combat damage.

I would also emphasize that only a single target tapped creature will be destroyed, not any tapped creatures! A player could also untap the creature in response, in which case your spell would be countered for not having a legal target.

You did that thingy correctly! :)
In the declare attackers step, after declaring attackers, players get a round of priority where you could cast Swift Reckoning. You get another opportunity in the declare blockers step (as well as after the first strike combat damage step if a creature with first strike is involved in combat).
Note that not all creatures will be tapped when attacking.
