"Smite" rules clarification
Asked by Dugorithon 12 years ago
If I cast Smite after declaring blockers, can I prevent a huge creature with trample from dealing me any damage?

Combat damage is dealt in the Combat Damage step. If you destroy a creature before Combat Damage step begins, it will not be present to deal any damage.

Excellent. Adding some Smite to a new deck of mine to mess with the local aggro builds.

Yes, the creature is destroyed before the combat damage is dealt. It is blocked as soon as you declare the blocker, even if it is a 1/1 no trample will hit you.
"6/15/2010 A "blocked creature" is an attacking creature that has been blocked by a creature this combat, or has become blocked as the result of a spell or ability this combat. Unless the attacking creature leaves combat, it continues to be a blocked creature through the end of combat step, even if the creature or creatures that blocked it are no longer on the battlefield or have otherwise left combat by then."
