shroud - stack - removal

Asked by ExpectDragons 11 years ago

I have a Naya Hushblade and a Woolly Thoctar on the field and swing during combat, they have a chance to respond and want to remove both however the hushblade has shroud until the thoctar leaves the battlefield. So would that mean they choose to respond by pathing my thoctar, that then revolves and is removed from the battlefield, the point at which they can respond has passed, combat damage goes on the stack and they can then bolt my hushblade my damage is still dealt? Or can they just path the thoctar and bolt the hushblade before combat if so, why?

Yes, they can path to exile your wooly thoctor as long as they do it before the combat damage step (giving them a few chances in the combat phase. Beginning of combat, declare attackers, and declare blockers steps all have times when players can cast spells).

that then revolves and is removed from the battlefield, the point at which they can respond has passed,

No. After a spell or ability resolves, the active player receives priority, can play/activate more spells/abilities, and pass priority. When you pass priority again, your opponent again receives it and can add more items to the stack. Only when both players do not add anything to the empty stack does the game move to the next step/phase. Your opponent is allowed to let their spell resolve before playing another one.

combat damage goes on the stack

Damage does not use the stack anymore.

and they can then bolt my hushblade my damage is still dealt?

If they wait till the combat damage step, then no they can't path it till your creature has dealt damage, but as you see they don't need to wait.

Or can they just path the thoctar and bolt the hushblade before combat if so, why?

This. See above.
