Righteous Blow usage

Asked by Socraticmoron 6 years ago

If I am attacked and and I am announcing blockers would a righteous blow kill my blocker before 1. They block and 2. Stop my creature from hitting their's. Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question, but I just started playing.

You can use double square brackets around a card's name to create a pop-up tag. It's the easiest way to make sure everyone understands what's going on in your question. Righteous Blow

  1. No, it won't kill your blocker before it blocks. A creature only becomes a blocking creature when it actually blocks, and that's when it becomes a legal target for Righteous Blow. The attacking creature it blocked will stay blocked (i.e. the attacker won't deal any combat damage to you unless it has trample).

  2. It depends on exactly when your opponent casts Righteous Blow, but usually it will stop your creature from dealing damage. The "combat damage" step of combat comes after the "declare blockers" step of combat. If your opponent kills the blocker before the "combat damage" step starts, then it won't deal any damage to the attacker it blocked. It would be unusual for your opponent to wait until after damage is deal to cast Righteous Blow, but there may be an odd situation where it's the correct play.
