Regenerate and combat?
Asked by WorkAround 12 years ago
Can I use regenerate in response to a card going to the grave? This ways damage was done before I regenerated meaning removing from combat does not stop damage. If this works do I still get to keep any counters on the card?
As Broken says above...510.2. Second, all combat damage that's been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time it's dealt. This is a change from previous rules.
I believe, your wanting your creature to kill another and then regenerate, which you absolutely can.
Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. The word "instead" doesn't appear on the card but is implicit in the definition of regeneration. "Regenerate [permanent]" means "The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage from it, tap it, and (if it's in combat) remove it from combat." Abilities that trigger from damage being dealt still trigger even if the permanent regenerates.
The "removes from combat" part will happen after damage is dealt and creatures check to go to graves, so it will still let you kill their creature while protecting yours.

I think there's still one point of confusion that hasn't been addressed yet.
The regeneration event - remove marked damage, tap it, remove it from combat - doesn't happen as soon as you activate the regeneration ability. It waits to kick in until the time when the creature would actually be destroyed, and replaces destruction with regeneration. Activating a regeneration ability essentially sets up a "shield" that lasts until it gets used up or until the end of the turn, whichever comes first.
As long as you activate the regeneration ability before the damage dealing step of combat, it will be in place to save your creature from being destroyed in combat. Your creature will deal combat damage. The "remove from combat" part of regeneration matters for situations where something would happen to destroy the creature before the damage dealing step of combat.

If the creature has been dealt lethal damage, and you try to activate a regenerate ability, the creature will die when state based actions are checked which will be before it regenerates so it will die.
