Question about the ability of Shrieking Drake

Asked by abenz419 11 years ago

it says when Shrieking Drake comes into play return a creature you control to owners hand.

Do I have to return a creature to my hand when I play him or is it optional? I'm leaning towards I have to. If I have to and I don't control another creature does the ability just fizzle?

The only ruling on the gather is 10/4/2004 You choose the creature to return on resolution of the triggered ability. This is not targeted.

You have to. There is no "May" in the ability.

The ability doesn't say "another". if you play him and he is the only creature you control when his ability resolves, you return him.

Yeah I kind of figured it wasn't optional. That seemed logical with no "may" in there but I wanted to be sure before i came across any potential problems. I'm glad I asked though because as many times as I've read that card (countless), I always read that as another creature and never thought about having to return itself. Thats good to know for any triggered ETB abilities on any enchantments or artifacts thought. One mana for a repeat trigger, depending on what the trigger is that could be really useful considering it could be done as many times as I had blue mana.

I'd be tempted to pair it with Aluren for a storm deck for giggles.
