Pyromancer's ascension
Asked by pretickle 9 years ago
When I cast a spell to get the second counter on Pyromancer's Ascension does that spell copy itself because the place a counter on pyro ascension rule goes off before the copy the spell rule? Or do I have to cast another spell for the double to go off? Probably terribly worded...
The spell that puts the 2nd counter on Pyromancer Ascension will not be copied.

Pyromancer Ascension
There's a difference between rules and abilities. Pyromancer Ascension has abilities. Rules are things that define how the game works overall.
10/1/2009: The second ability triggers only if Pyromancer Ascension already has two quest counters on it at the time you cast an instant or sorcery spell. This means a spell can't both cause the second counter to be put on Pyromancer Ascension and become copied.
This wording is actually pretty straightforward. If nothing else, the last line makes it clear that you can't copy something in this situation. If Pyromancer Ascension doesn't have two quest counters on it when you cast a spell, the spell won't be copied. Pyromancer Ascension's last ability won't trigger if the condition isn't met at the time the trigger event happens.
If Pyromancer Ascension has one quest counter on it and you cast an instant or sorcery spell with the same name as a card in your graveyard, Pyromancer Ascension's first ability will trigger, but its second ability will not. Even though Pyromancer Ascension will get an additional quest counter, the time at which the second ability would trigger will be long over by then, and abilities never retroactively trigger.

The wording on gatherer doesn't make too much sense for me on this.
