Noob Q: Blood Lust type plays

Asked by Chalkarts 12 years ago

When i played over 10 years ago powers that gave negative toughness couldn't actually kill a creature, for example Blood Lust which gave +4/-4 didnt' kill the critter it altered. Is that still the case?

I don't know how the rules used to be, but this is the current rule:

704.5f If a creature has toughness 0 or less, it's put into its owner's graveyard. Regeneration can't replace this event.
This is a state-based action.

Blood Lust , specifically, has changed as of 11/1/2005. here' s the oracle text followed by the ruling

If target creature has toughness 5 or greater, it gets +4/-4 until end of turn. Otherwise, it gets +4/-X until end of turn, where X is its toughness minus 1.

Has changed slightly in functionality, with the old continuous nature of the toughness reduction gone away; the toughness change remains static. For example, if you have three Swamps and Nightmare on the battlefield and then cast Blood Lust on it, it will become 7/1. If one of your Swamps is subsequently destroyed, your Nightmare will become 6/0 and be put in the graveyard.

that being said, anything that has a 0 toughness when state-based effects are checked dies instantly. I hope that answers your question

No, any time a creature's toughness falls to 0, it is destroyed. Indestructible creatures will also die to loss of toughness.

@Chibisukei: Creatures with 0 or less toughness are not destroyed, they're just placed in their owner's graveyards. This is important because if it were a destroy effect, it would not kill indestructible creatures.

sorry, thats what I meant, I just said destroy because it was easier to say without realizing the importance of the wording

The reason Blood Lust worked this way is because it has always had special rules text specifically saying it's effect doesn't reduce the creature's toughness below 1. If a -/- effect doesn't have any special text like this, then it can reduce a creature's toughness below 1, and it has always been true in the rules that a creature with 0 or less toughness is put into the graveyard.
