Lotus Vale

When you don't sacrifice the lands for Lotus Vale, from what zone does it go to the graveyard?

It doesn't enter play, if that's what you're asking. There is a condition that must be met before the land comes into play, so there is no opportunity for you to tap for mana or anything in between "playing" Lotus Vale and it hitting the graveyard.

So does it go to graveyard FROM: Hand? Stack? Purgatory?

From hand to grave if you don't sac the lands. Note that it is not considered a discard though.
It can't be from the stack because lands do not use the stack.

Stack. In order for it to enter the battlefield it first goes onto the stack.

And just to emphasize what Mpz5 is saying, check out the oracle ruling at: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=4593
Then, click on ruling at the bottom of the page.

It goes into the graveyard.
Oracle Text:
If Lotus Vale would enter the battlefield, sacrifice two untapped lands instead. If you do, put Lotus Vale onto the battlefield. If you don't, put it into its owner's graveyard.
t: Add three mana of any one color to your mana pool.
This is some updated text for it.
Hope this helps.
