Keeping auras/equipment on "until end of turn" creatures
Asked by bigriver 9 years ago
I have a permanent that can become a creature until end of turn (e.g. Inkmoth Nexus, Creeping Tar Pit). I activate the ability to turn it into a creature during my main phase, then I enchant it with an "Enchant Creature" aura and equip it with an equipment. My question is, is there a way to keep the aura and equipment attached if I re-activate the "until end of turn" creature ability during my end step?
My understanding is that illegal auras and equipment attachments are checked as a state-based action "automatically" and "all at once" every time a player gets priority. But I also understand that that "until end of turn" triggers are put onto the stack before either player gets priority during the end step, and that these "until end of turn" triggers can accordingly be responded to before they resolve.
So put simply, if I always keep one mana free during my own end step, and another mana free during my opponent's end step, can I keep my Inkmoth Nexus a creature (with its auras and equipment attached) indefinitely?
"Until end of turn" is a duration. There is no triggered ability that has to resolve before the effect stops working. It just stops working as soon as the turn is over, and the enchantment or equipment will fall off before anyone is able to use any abilities or cast any spells.
You cannot keep your land creatures enchanted or equipped across turns that way.

First of all, "until end of turn" effects don't last until your end step, but until your cleanup step (which happens after the end step). They also can't be responded to, as they don't use the stack in any way - instead, simply all effects end at a certain time during the cleanup step. Last but not least, state-based actions themselves happen right before any player would receive priority, and they can't be responded to either, so your equipment would be unattached before you could ever animate your land again. Even if you could - if any player gets priority during the cleanup step, there will be another cleanup step after that one.
