Is there any age limit on official MTG tournaments?

Asked by Bloodthirsty 11 years ago

Hey guys.

My brother really wants to go on a modern MTG tournament in Czech republic, but he is only 12 years old. He speaks english well and he has no social problems. Can he go there?

It would depend on the type of tournament. I know that at FNM (Friday Night Magic), any age is allowed.

I think it's called constructed, but I am not sure. It's that type of tournament where players bring their own homemade decks and fight for the first place.

Unless the venue has an age limit (I've heard of some small stand-up events that were held in the back room of a bar), there's no age limit to enter any sanctioned DCI event. As long as the player can play at a reasonable pace and communicate effectively with his opponents, it doesn't matter. I've played against opponents younger than your brother many times in the past.

In order to play in a Wizards-sanctioned Magic event, a player must have a DCI card. Anyone can easily register for one at the event. It just requires some basic personal information (name, age, address, email, etc). For legal reasons, a minor under the age of 13 must have a legal guardian to co-sign it.

This is how it works in the US at least, it might be different where you live.
