Is legendary a creature type? Or just a card type?
Asked by exarkun809 14 years ago
If I cast card:Belbe's Portal can I name Legendary as my creature type?
I'm guessing the answer is no since Legendary is a card type... but we have the Tribal Instants/Sorceries that count as creature types, so I wanted to check.
You're right to think legendary isn't
Legendary is a card type not subtype it's the opposite, a supertype. The creature type is a subtype of the creature card type, identifiable after the long dash after the card type.
Subtype
204.3b Subtypes of each card type except plane are always single words and are listed after a long dash. Each word after the dash is a separate subtype; such objects may have multiple types. Subtypes of planes are also listed after a long dash, but may be multiple words; all words after the dash are, collectively, a single subtype.
Supertype
204.4a A card can also have one or more supertypes. These are printed directly before its card types. The supertypes are basic, legendary, ongoing, snow, and world.

- correcting, I meant "not a card type and not a subtype, it's a supertype"

No, I believe it's just a card type. Not a creature type. Artifacts and lands can also be legendary, so that wouldn't make sense.
