If one creature attacks and the blocking creature gets instant killed, does the damage get through?
Asked by Kickass101 11 years ago
I was hanging out with 2 friends of mine and one of them was attacking in this situation and I was blocking. Even though both me and my other friend said the damage didn't get through, he wouldn't believe it. He didn't even believe our google search. He sat there for 2 hours and wouldn';t let us do anything because he was "thinking." I know he believes this site so can someone tell him the answer?

If a creature gets blocked and the blocker is then somehow removed, the attacting creature still remains blocked for the duration of combat. Unless that creature has trample, it deals no combat damage to the defending player or planeswalker. If it has trample, it can deal its entire worth of combat damage to the defending player or planeswalker.

If an attacking creature is blocked it does not do combat damage to the player, unless an ability states it does (Thorn Elemental , trample). Even if the blocking creature is destroyed (by something like Doomblade) your creature was blocked by it, so it does not do damage to the player. If the creature has trample and the creature blocking it was destroyed, the creature will do damage to the player.

There's more to this rule, but here's the start.
510.1c. A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage.

You need to shed more light on the situation. What creatures were attacking, and which were blocking. Were there any spells or other permanents affecting the board?
