if double strike kills its blocker with the first strike will the second still hit target player?

when using a double strike on savage born hydra i swung 13 with double strike and it was blocked with one creature. we were confused on if the second strike still does combat damage

When the creature is blocked, it will deal no combat damage to the defending player unless it had trample.

510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage.

So in the normal damage step, its blocker has been destroyed but since it was a blocked creature it deals no combat damage in that step.

would double strike deal double damage as well to a player

This depends solely if the creature has trample. If the creature does not have trample, then since it was assigned blocked, it will deal no damage to the player. Trample on the other hand, would assign the damage to the player.

In that case, yes. The first combat damage step happens and the player is dealt damage equal to the attacking creature's power. If the player is still alive, the creature will deal damage again in the second combat damage step.

With that accepted answer, it is still just talking about the first combat step, so if the creature dies then there is the second step and if the other player doesn't assign a blocker for the second step then the damage will go to the player. See 702.4b

702.4. Double Strike

702.4a Double strike is a static ability that modifies the rules for the combat damage step. (See rule 510, Combat Damage Step.)

702.4b If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that didnt have first strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

702.4c Removing double strike from a creature during the first combat damage step will stop it from assigning combat damage in the second combat damage step.

702.4d Giving double strike to a creature with first strike after it has already put first strike combat damage onto the stack in the first combat damage step will allow the creature to assign combat damage in the second combat damage step.

702.4e Multiple instances of double strike on the same creature are redundant.

@Squirrel_of_War: Blockers are only assigned once per combat phase - in the declare blockers step. If the blocker dies in the first strike damage step, that's it. You don't get to assign another one for normal combat damage.

No offense, but if you're going to revive a thread from 5 months ago, please at least post correct information.

@Epochalyptik I wasn't just trolling threads. I came against a similar scenario while playing a friend during my lunch break and we were trying to figure out what happens. I've read countless threads and I am now clear on what happens. A few of the responses were unclear to me and I misunderstood, thus the incorrect info. My B bro.
