Hunter's Insight question.

Asked by ptburnham 13 years ago

I'm unsure how to interpret card:Hunter's Insight. Does this card allow for a draw effect per each point of damage dealt or does it allow a single draw effect for the instance of dealing combat damage as a whole? If it's the former why isn't it worded, "draw card equal to target creature's power" or something like that? Would I have to have a creature with double strike in order to draw two cards? That would make this card pretty worthless in a mono green deck which is where I want it to go.

It allows you to draw one card for each 1 combat damage dealt by that creature to an opponent.

It's not worded like card:Soul's Majesty because that is incredibly powerful. They wanted flavor to it. It's more likely that the creature you cast card:Hunter's Insight on has trample or is a small creature that was let through so your opponent could block a larger one. This balances the power of the card and also punishes their block decision.

A creature with double strike would go well with Hunter's Insight, but is not necessary to draw multiple cards.

you should cast it before it deals combat damage otherwise it would be useless

The example of trample is exactly why they worded it that way. If you've got a big trampler - Carnage Wurm , say, with its 9/9 on - and you need to draw some cards, you can cast it on the Wurm and still draw cards over a chump block, since you'll still deal some trample damage and draw that many cards.

Its wording was chosen to drive home the fact that it's based on your creature going into the red zone and dealing damage to an opponent, not just the amount of damage your creature could do.
