How long does a card with Madness stay in exile?

Asked by jcofer 9 years ago

I understand a discarded card with Madness in its oracle text goes to exile, then may be cast. How long does it stay there in exile before eventually being put into the graveyard? Until that card's owner passes? Until end of turn?

Thanks.

702.34a Madness is a keyword that represents two abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with madness is in a players hand. The second is a triggered ability that functions when the first ability is applied. "Madness [cost]" means "If a player would discard this card, that player discards it, but may exile it instead of putting it into his or her graveyard" and "When this card is exiled this way, its owner may cast it by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost. If that player doesnt, he or she puts this card into his or her graveyard."

You may replace discarding putting the card into your graveyard with putting it into the exile zone. If you do, the triggered ability goes on the stack. When it resolves, you get the chance to cast the card from exile. If you do not do this, it is put into your graveyard.

So, to answer your question: While the triggered ability of the Madness keyword resolves, the card is moved from the exile zone to the stack or to its owner's graveyard.

Players do get a chance to interact with the card while it's exiled, but this interaction can only happen at instant speed.

While hyperlocke is correct, note that Madness is about to change when Shadows Over Innistrad releases. As can be read in this article about SOI, Madness will now have a mandatory exile effect.

So under the new rules, if you discard a card with Madness, you will exile it while the Madness trigger is on the stack. As thr ability resolves, if you choose not to cast the card for its Madness cost, it will be put into the graveyard.
