How lifelink is calculated

Just wondering how lifelink is calculated. If I have a creature that's a 5/5 lifelink attacking a creature that's a 2/2 do I get 2 life or five? Does damage accumulate until death or do you take all the damage it can possibly do to a creature regardless of their life total?

You would gain 5 life as 5 damage is dealt regardless of toughness. The same is true if attacking players or planeswalkers with less life/loyalty.
