How is damage distributed for a Double Strike, Trample, Lifelink?
Asked by Brimstone 12 years ago
If a more powerful creature with Double Strike attacks a less powerful creature, will the second attack ever occur?
For Example:a) If my 2/2 Double Strike, Lifelink Creature attacks an opponents 1/1 creature, will I gain 2 or 4 life?
b) Will my opponent take any damage?
c) If the above happens while my creature also has Trample, will my opponent take 1 damage or 3?
a) In this scenario, you would gain 2 life. After the 1/1 creature takes 2 damage in the first strike damage step, SBAs are checked, and the 1/1 creature would be destroyed. As he is considered blocked, the damage in the normal combat damage step would be ignored, as there is no longer a blocked creature to do the damage to.
b) The opponent would not take the normal combat damage step, as your creature is considered blocked. Unless...
c) If the creature did indeed have trample, then 1 damage could be done to the player in the first strike combat step, then during the normal combat damage step, 2 damage would be done directly to the player, as there is no longer a creature to damage, totalling 3 damage.

To help explain the not doing normal combat step part:
510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage.
To help explain the trample normal combat step part:
702.17c If an attacking creature with trample is blocked, but there are no creatures blocking it when damage is assigned, all its damage is assigned to the player or planeswalker its attacking.
Hope this helps!

Fist strike damage occurs, the blocker absorbs 1 damage and one tramples over, then regular damage occurs, no blockers, so 2 goes through. opponent takes 3 damage and you gain 4 life.
