How does this work out?

Asked by Bockduck 7 years ago

I attack with Preeminent Captain and I then put out Captain of the Watch due to Preeminents ability. How will this now work out? Will they get +1/+1? Vigilance? Tokens in play and so on. Explain this to me, thanks!

The creature you put onto the battlefield using Preeminent Captain's ability enters tapped and attacking, per the instructions of that ability. Vigilance won't cause Captain of the Watch to enter untapped, nor will it retroactively untap Preeminent Captain.

As soon as Captain of the Watch enters the battlefield, other Soldiers you control will get +1/+1 and have vigilance. This effect lasts until Captain of the Watch leaves the battlefield (or until you lose control of Captain of the Watch).

Captain of the Watch's last ability will also trigger. When this ability resolves, you'll get three 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens. These tokens will enter the battlefield as 2/2s with vigilance due to Captain of the Watch's second ability.

When Preeminent Captain, Captain of the Watch is not on the field, so the Kithkin taps when he attacks as normal. At this point the fact that the creature is tapped is kinda locked in. Vigilance just means that, when you declare the creature as an attacker, you don't have to tap it, it doesn't untap creatures that already attacking.

So Preeminent Captain attacks and triggers. When the trigger resolves, you put the Captain of the Watch in. The trigger on Preeminent Captain specifically says that you put in the creature as tapped and attacking. Once again, vigilance simply means that when you declare a creature as an attacker you don't have to tap it. Nothing says it changes the way some triggers resolve - in fact, it has nothing to do with the situation at all, since the Captain of the Watch was never declared as an attacker in the first place, it just appeared onto the battlefield attacking. The Captain of the Watch will enter the battlefield tapped.

Next time Preeminent Captain attacks, if Captain of the Watch is still around, Preeminent Captain will not tap to attack (since this time it had vigilance at the time the attack was declared). However, if you put in another soldier with his ability, it will still enter the battlefield tapped since the trigger specifically says so.

Will the preeminent captain get +1+1?

yes.

step 1: preeminent captain attacks.

step 2: his ability triggers and you put Captain of the Watch into play.

step 3: Captain of the watch triggers and makes tokens

step 4: move to the rest of combat, with Captain of the watch already in play and Preeminent Captain already tapped and attacking. So he does get the +1/+1, but he is already tapped so the vigilance doesn't matter this turn.
