How does "Scavenge" work?
Asked by Cheesebag 12 years ago
Let's say I have a Deadbridge Goliath with 3 +1/+1 counters on it, (so it would be an 8/8) and it dies and I decide to Scavenge it right away. Would I put 5 +1/+1 counters on a target creature, or 8 of them?
Thank you so much! I had a feeling that was how it worked.

Epochalyptik is correct, but the second thing is a bit too much of a blanket statement. Some abilities, depending on how they are worded, will check the last known states of a permanent when they leave the battlefield to have an impact on gamestate. Scavenge, being that its an activated ability that functions while creatures that have it are in the graveyard, doesn't actually look at the last known state of those creatures, but if scavenge was changed into a activated ability that created a delayed trigger rather than an activated ability that functions only while in the graveyard, you could get 8 counters in that circumstance you suggested.

Two things mean you only get five +1/+1 counters:
1) Scavenge specifies that you get a number of +1/+1 counters equal to the creature card's power. The power of the card is its written value, which in the case of Deadbridge Goliath is 5.
2) When a creature permanent changes zones, it loses all of its counters. Therefore, even if scavenge didn't specify card, the power of Deadbridge Goliath is still 5.
