How does confiscation coup work with ETB cards?

Asked by Pappyy1369 7 years ago

I'm play testing my deck and used Confiscation Coup against a Regal Caracal .

Do I get the ETB trigger of gaining 2 1/1 token cats with lifelink? Or since the card was already in play I don't get the ETB trigger even though when I take control of it I know I can't attack with it because it has summoning sickness.

So basically I am asking since the creature I am taking over has summoning sickness do I get the ETB trigger as well?

No, the person who controls it when it enters get the etb effect. Changing control does not make it leave or enter play.

Regal Caracal

Gaining control of a permanent does not cause it to change zones.

Think of it as the permanent simply "walking" across the battlefield to your side, it'll still be on the battlefield the whole time.

It will have summoning sickness though because you have not controlled it since the beginning of your most recent turn

You do not get the ETB trigger because Summoning Sickness doesn't actually have to do with entering the battlefield in it of itself; rather, SS cares about how long you CONTROL a creature.

So, if you have controlled a creature since the beginning of your turn, it doesn't have SS. If you gained control of it this turn, however, it does because you haven't controlled it since the BEGINNING of your turn.

TL;DR: No ETB trigger as it never enters the battlefield again. SS because you gained control of it during that turn.
