Goblin Fireslinger and Artillerize
Asked by J3Carlisle 11 years ago
Am I able to block with a goblin fireslinger, tap it to deal 1 damage to player, and sacrifice it for Artillerize to? originally I had thought that I was able to do this and deal 1 damage to the blocked creature, 1 to the player, and than another 5 to the player or another creature with Artillerize.
I was told recently that I could not perform all three actions together, but after searching for the answer the best I understand is that by tapping or sacrificing, the Fireslinger would not cause damage to the attacking creature, but would still deal damage from the tapped ability, as well as the 5 from the sacrafice with Artillerize.
Any and all help would be grand

You block with the Goblin Fireslinger in the declare blockers step. Then there is a round of priority in the combat damage step. You can then tap the Fireslinger to deal 1 damage in this round of priority, then sac it to Artillerize to deal 5 damage, so the Fireslinger is no longer on the battlefield. After this round of priority, combat damage is dealt. At this time, Fireslinger isn't on the battlefield, so it can't deal any combat damage (although the creature remains blocked).

Combat damage is dealt before you get priority in the combat damage step, Assigning and then dealing damage is the first thing to happen there. His last chance to perform these actions would be in the declare blockers step, after blockers are declared.

Sorry, my bad, I got the phases mixed up. I knew there was a round of priority, but I couldn't remember what phase it was in. Either way, the answer still stands: you declare blocks, then tap for 1 damage, sac for 5 and deal no combat damage.

Goblin Fireslinger , Artillerize
You can do both, but no combat damage will be dealt by the Fireslinger.
