Goblin Chieftain dies before damage?

So I want to make sure I'm right on this and it doesn't work like battle cry. So I play a chieftain and attack with a couple creatures, and they kill the chieftain before damage. The other goblins I attacked with then lose their +1/+1 bonus before damage correct?
