First Strike Vs. Indestructible

Asked by RLLeaderO 10 years ago

So this is an interesting problem i came up against, and that is: If I have a first/double strike creature with enough power to match the toughness of the indestructible it is blocking, does the attacking creature still get damage through or does it miss combat because it is considered fatal at the time?

Damage is still done. Just that the indestructible creature wouldn't die.

Not exactly the answer i need, I guess I should have been more specific. Normally if first strike damage is higher than the opposing creature's toughness, the opposing creature doesn't get to deal it's damage. I was wondering if the indestructible would get it's damage through to the blocker with first strike.

Yes, the indestructible creature will get to deal it's damage. Because the indestructible hasn't been put into the graveyard.

FALLEN-X-ANGEL is correct. Lethal damage does not remove the creature from combat. Normally a creature is put into the graveyard as a state based action if it has lethal damage and thus removed from combat and not able to deal damage, but indestructibility ignores that action so the creature remains in combat and deals its damage as normal.

119.5 Damage dealt to a creature or planeswalker doesnt destroy it. Likewise, the source of that damage doesnt destroy it. Rather, state-based actions may destroy a creature or planeswalker, or otherwise put it into its owners graveyard, due to the results of the damage dealt to that permanent. See rule 704.

702.12b A permanent with indestructible cant be destroyed. Such permanents arent destroyed by lethal damage, and they ignore the state-based action that checks for lethal damage (see rule 704.5g).

506.4 A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes, if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat, if its a planeswalker thats being attacked and stops being a planeswalker, or if its an attacking or blocking creature that regenerates (see rule 701.12) or stops being a creature. A creature thats removed from combat stops being an attacking, blocking, blocked, and/or unblocked creature. A planeswalker thats removed from combat stops being attacked.
