First Strike vs Double Strike
Asked by Cevil 12 years ago
Alright, so my cousin and I are playing. He has a Precinct Captain and I block with my Warren Instigator . What will happen? I thought we would both die, but my cousin says precinct will win. I'm not sure. Thanks.

Short story: Warren Instigator dies, Precinct Captain has one damage marked on it.

Long story: This is how it breaks down. After the declare blockers step, there is the first strike damage step, and at that step Precinct Captain does two damage to Warren Instigator and Warren Instigator does one damage to Precinct Captain . After that step is completed, state based actions are checked. Because Warren Instigator has more damage marked on it than it has toughness, it goes to the graveyard and any "dies" triggers activate. After all of that is done, the regular damage step occurs. Precinct Captain doesn't do anything because he only does damage in the first strike combat step, and Warren Instigator would LIKE to do damage, but it's far too dead to do so.

Yup.
If it was a 2/2 vs a 1/1 double strike then they'd both die
But a 2/2 first strike kills a 1/1 double

The official wording for double strike is "This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage." Precinct Captain would deal lethal damage to Warren Instigator during the first strike combat step and be left with 1 damage marked on it.
Warren Instigator would then be dead of course and deal no damage during the regular combat damage step.
702.4b If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that didnt have first strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

@xteXhex: Let's say that Warren Instigator is blocked by Raging Goblin . After the first strike damage step, the normal damage step occurs. Warren Instigator tries to deal 1 damage to Raging Goblin (it's blockers), who no longer exists. As you said, the damage would be lost.

@xxteXhex Unless it had trample, it would only kill the 1/1.

Precinct should win, I believe. Since they technically both have first strike (double strike deals damage in both parts of damage, first strike and regular), Captain would kill the Instigator before regular damage.
