Fight Vs Deathtouch (Revisited)
Asked by battleborn 10 years ago
So I'm relatively new to the game and have had a few questions concerning Setessan Tactics and the fight ability I can grant my creatures. In particular, I'm wondering if deathtouch really is ignored by the fight mechanic. I've searched multiple threads and in each one, people say death touch still applies. However, the rules state as follows:
[In regards to Fight]- 701.10d The damage dealt when a creature fights isnt combat damage.
[In regards to Deathtouch]- 702.2b Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creatures toughness. See rules 510.1cd.
It appears death touch applies to combat damage, and the fight mechanic involves non combat damage, thus, deathtouch is not applicable. Can someone please correct me so I don't look dumb when I go out in public haha.

Thank you! I forgot to post that next part; it was next in my question but I got too hasty.

Well, the very next rule involving Deathtouch says:
702.2c. A creature with toughness greater than 0 thats been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. See rule 704.
So yeah, deathtouch applies to noncombat damage as well (which includes fighting). A creature with deathtouch that fights another creature will end up destroying that creature.
