Extort Trigger

Asked by shadowfoxxx 13 years ago

I want to make sure I understand how extort is going to work. If I have X creatures with extort in play and I cast a spell. Will I be able to pay 1 B/W mana and have X triggers of extort go off? Or will I have to pay for each one to work?

You can never use one payment to satisfy multiple costs or optional payments. When each individual extort ability resolves, you are given the option to pay B/W. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life. That payment only counts toward the ability that prompted it; it doesn't also satisfy other extort abilities.

Could you extort multiple times with the same spell? Almost like a multikicker effect ornot

No. Extort is a triggered ability that prompts you for an optional payment, W/B. It does not prompt you to pay any amount of W/B; rather, it only asks (and only allows) for a single white or black mana.

However, if you have multiple instances of extort on permanents you control, each instance will trigger for each spell you cast.

I'm still confused a little bit, are we suggesting that I can pay up to X w/b per spell: where X is the number of permanents I control with Extort on them? Or will one extra w/b on top of my spell cause all X of them to trigger?

Extort is a triggered ability. Each extort ability of each permanent you control triggers when you cast a spell. When each ability resolves, it prompts you for an optional payment of W/B. That payment is specific to that instance of extort. If you pay, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life. If you don't, nothing happens.

Extort says "whenever you cast a spell you may pay w/b" To me this means playing one spell triggers every extort you have available as long as you have the mana to pay for each one. Long story short, Extrort is triggered by a spell cast and a mana payment, one spell cast is good for all instances of extort and the mana needs to be paid for each.
