Double Strike Vs. Double Strike. Who Wins?

Asked by Epicpyro2001 11 years ago

So if there are 2 creatures, each have Double Strike who would win? For example a 6/6 with Double Strike is attacking another creature with Double Strike and happens to be a 6/6, would the attacker get to deal double damage first, or vice versa?

How damage works is that, after attackers have been declared, and blockers have been declared, the combat damage step commences. During this, there is a step where Creatures who deal first strike damage all simultaneously deal their damage, then the creatures who deal regular damage deal their damage simultaneously. If a 6/6 double strike blocks a 6/6 double strike, then they will both trade.

A creature with double strike deals damage equal to its power in two combat damage steps: the first strike damage step and the regular combat damage step.

In your above example, both the attacking and defending creature would deal damage to each other in the first strike combat damage step. Then the game would check state-based actions, and see both creatures with lethal damage marked and put them into the graveyard. Neither creature would deal damage in the regular combat damage step (because they're dead during that time).

The trick is to get your head to separate the idea of 'double strike' with 'deals double damage'

It doesn't actually deal double damage. It deals normal damage twice.

When the declare blockers step ends, and the combat damage step begins, it checks if any of the creatures in combat have double strike or first strike. If they do, they all deal their regular damage at once, simultaneously. Then the game creates a second combat damage step. In that step, any creatures who lack first strike or have double strike and are still alive will deal their normal damage at once, simultaneously.
