double strike versus deathtouch
Asked by invuln 10 years ago
long story short, how this ends wouldve decided how my last match would have ended and who would have won, he attacked me with a doublestrike lifelink against my 3/3 deathtouch, he did enough damage to kill my creature, mine didnt have enough attack to kill his, he says tho that his doublestrike is like first strike and the first hit wouldnt trigger the deathtouch, thats the first question, the second one, is he feels that the second of the doublestrike would then hit me, but either way he said he would get lifelink for both hits? who would be right/ how would this have actually played out? thanks!
This is what the reminder text for double strike use to be
This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.
So yes, the first strike in a double-strike counts as first-strike damage
But if the creature killed your creature with the first strike, it can't deal the second strike to your creature, because it's not there anymore, and your opponent won't gain any life.

For the first question, Deathtouch just modifies how the damage of the creature is dealt, making it so any amount of damage is lethal damage. If the creature died to first strike damage, it does not deal its damage to the other creature, so it has no chance to deal damage.
Let's assume the creature he attacked with was a 3/3 double strike, lifelink.
You block with a 3/3 deathtouch.
in the first strike damage phase, his attacker deals your blocker 3 damage, he gains 3 life.
State-based actions are checked and see your creature with lethal damage, it dies.
In the regular damage phase, his attacker, lacking trample, deals no damage.
He gains no life, answering your second question.
