Double strike trample blocking
Asked by Duh73 12 years ago
I had a 6/6 double strike creature with trample. I was being blocked by two 3/3 tokens. Neither of us were certain how it plays out. My thought was my 1st strike kills the 1st token and the 2nd strike kills his 2nd token. He thought this also, but he claims his 1st deals 3 damage to me and his 2nd deals 3 damage and so my 6/6 dies. I thought my 1st strike kills his before it has a chance to hit me.
We played it out that mine died, because it didn't matter in the end. We'd just like to know how it should be played out.

You have the opportunity to kill both tokens during the first strike damage step. Since the tokens don't have first strike, they cannot deal damage in the first strike damage step.
To maximize lethality, you should assign 3 damage to the first blocker and 3 damage to the second blocker during the first strike damage step. This will kill both tokens before they can deal combat damage to your 6/6. Then, in the normal combat damage step, you will assign all 6 damage to your opponent.

This is wrong. A blocked creature is blocked even if it has double strike. It can't do any damage to the opponent during it's "second strike" if there are no creatures left.

It would be wrong if the creature didn't have trample.

Simple.
The first strike:
Your 6/6 deals 3 damage to each token. Both of the tokens die.
"normal" strike:
You do 6 damage to the opponent due to trample
Remember, you get to assign 6 damage twice. Not 6 damage divided. I have no idea what your opponent is talking about.
