Double Strike make the creature double toughness?

Asked by Zorroxtein 12 years ago

I think that double strike is related to attack not to toughness. But my brother in law think different, so if he attack me with a creature 6/6 with double strike, and I block with a 6/6 regular, I think both die, he said hes lives because the double strike give total of 12 for attack and 12 for toughness....

Who is right?

His lives but not in the way he thinks it does. Double strike is first strike and regular strike, so it will deal 6 damage to your creature before yours deals damage. If your creature was a 7/7 to 12/12 then they would both die. It doesn't double toughness, though.

I see if I have a 7/7 and he have a 6/6 with double, he hit first with 6, mine become 7/1 the he hit with 6 I hit with 7 and both die...

In that case, your 7/7 would not become a 7/1. Damage does not reduce toughness (except for wither and infect damage, which deal damage to creatures by placing that many -1/-1 counters on them).

After the first combat damage step, your 7/7 would have 6 damage marked on it. After the second combat damage step, your 7/7 would have 12 damage marked on it and his 6/6 would have 7 damage marked on it. Both creatures would then be destroyed as a state-based action.

You are both wrong.

a 6/6 with double strike, does damage both in the first strike damage step and then again in the regular one.

if you block him with another 6/6, without first strike, then that creature will be killed during the first strike combat step by the doublestriker. Then unless it has trample the doublestrike creature will attack thin air during the second combat damage step. (if it has trample it will damage you)

If you block a 6/6 double strike with a 7/7, both will die.
