Double Lifelink?

Asked by zeldazach 11 years ago

If I have a creature that says "Whenever this creature deals damage, its controller gains that much life." such as Essence Sliver and then I place an enchantment on it that gives it lifelink, such as Felidar Umbra is it essentially double lifelink or only 1

Yes, you'll gain the life immediately for lifelink when the damage is dealt then a trigger will go on the stack which, if it resolves, will gain you that amount again.

Abilities that read "Whenever this permanent deals damage, its controller gains that much life" are different from lifelink. Abilities that have the old wording are triggered abilities that trigger on damage from the source. Lifelink is a static ability that causes lifegain concurrently with damage. Multiple instances of lifelink are redundant, but triggered lifegain abilities stack.

The problem is that some older abilities have received errata so that they now say "lifelink." You need to check the Oracle text for older cards to be sure which one it is.

Essence Sliver still confers a triggered ability rather than true lifelink, so you can get the trigger and the lifelink effect from damage, netting you double the lifegain.
