Double Blocking
Asked by Dyelogan 10 years ago
I just started playing MTG with friends not to long ago and ran into a problem. When double blocking a 9/4 creature with two 3/3 creatures, and no special abilities, will the 9/4 kill both 3/3's? I also recently downloaded Magic 2015 on the Xbox one and the 9/4 killed one 3/3 but the other 3/3 lived. I thought the attacking 9/4 would assign all 9 to both creatures resulting in all 3 creatures dying. Sorry for such a long question in advance, but do all of them die or does one 3/3 live and why? Edit: I know both the 3/3's will kill the 9/4; I just don't understand why the game had one 3/3 live.

When an attacking creature is blocked by multiple blocking creatures, the attacking player declares a damage assignment order. This is the order in which the attacker will assign damage to the blockers. The attacking player will allocate all of the attacking creature's power in damage amongst that creature's blockers, and must assign lethal damage to the first creature in the DAO before assigning any to the second (and so on).
In this case, a 9/4 blocked by two 3/3s can assign lethal damage to both creatures. The 9/4 will be assigned 6 total damage in return. The end result is that all three creatures die.
The digital versions of Magic are known for being occasionally buggy, so they are sometimes inconsistent with the actual game rules.
