does indestructible prevent wither and infect?

Asked by student-of-life 10 years ago

If I had a creature that was indestructible, would infect or wither affect that creature?

If a creature's toughness is reduced to zero through -1/-1 counters or just by getting -X/-X, it will be put into the graveyard as a state-based action.

To expand on what GlistenerAgent said, indestructible does not prevent damage, it just keeps the creature from dying to it. Wither and infect can reduce the creatures toughness to zero causing it to die.

"indestructible" is a static ability that refers to ignoring the state-based action that checks for lethal damage (RULE: 702.12b)

Damage dealt to a creature by a source with infect causes that many -1/-1 counters to be placed on that creature (RULE: 119.3d)

However, RULE: 704.5f states "If a creature has toughness 0 or less, it's put into its owner's graveyard. regeneration can't replace this event"

In short, yes, infect/wither do affect creatures with indestructible as it is not considered "lethal damage" as a state-based action.

Would a 1/1 with infect take out Armored Transport? I believe it would since the negative counters would not be prevented

Damage is dealt as poison counters or -1/-1 counters, so the damage would still be prevented.
