Does flanking stack?

Asked by Phyrexia108 12 years ago

Does the keyword ability "flanking" stack? The ability exalted stacks if you have multiple instances even on the same card. I am wondering if a creature has double flanking does a blocking creature get -2/-2 instead of -1/-1. For those who want to know I am asking this because I want to know if having two Sidewinder Sliver s create double flanking on all your creatures?

Yes. Each instance of flanking triggers and resolves separately, so their effects are cumulative.

Yes, flanking does stack. Flanking is a triggered ability that reads "Whenever a creature without flanking blocks this creature, the blocking creature gets -1/-1." So if a creature has two instances of flanking they will both trigger. The first to resolve giving -1/-1, the next giving an additional -1/-1, for -2/-2 total. See Cavalry Master , which would be useless if it did not stack.

Oh, i thought flanking only applied for the creature that had flanking. So if i have 3 flankers, and i attack with one, and they block, they'll get -3/-3?

No. It's each instance of flanking -on the creature- that trigger.

So if a creature with flanking gets flanking, it will give -2/-2 to the blocking creature.

@KingSorin: No. You control three creatures with flanking. Let's say you have three Knight of the Holy Nimbus .

You attack with one. Your opponent blocks with a creature that doesn't have flanking. That creature will get -1/-1 for each instance of flanking on each creature it's blocking. Because it isn't blocking the other two flankers you control, it only gets -1/-1 from the one it is blocking.

That's what i thought, but the wording above was a bit unclear, so just checking. But if one you have three Cavalry Master s out, they all have three instances of flanking, so they'll get -3/-3, correct?

Correct. If a blocking creature doesn't have flanking, it gets -X/-X, where X is the number of instances of flanking among creatures it's blocking.
