Does does the effect of Buyback still happen if the spell is countered

If you cast a spell with buyback and choose to pay the buyback cost and someone counters the spell does that also counter the buyback effect?

If an opponent counters a spell with buyback, the spell will not resolve. Therefore, it's buyback ability will not occur, as it only returns the card to your hand as the spell resolves.
