does death go on the stack?

Asked by kevinmtg24 13 years ago

say my opponent swings at me with a creature bringing my life to 0. In response i flashback card:Devil's Play bringing him to 0. Does his death resolve first making me the victor or is it a tie?

you need to respond before the creature deals damage

the only way the draw with damage is if one effect resolves dealing lethal damage to you bouth at the same time,

otherwise the first one to reach 0 dies when SBA are checked after that effect resolves

you could not respond with devil's play because its a sorcery

but if you could you would win as long as you played it before the creature delt damage

Death is not something that goes on the stack, and neither is combat damage.

Once a player's life reaches 0, state-based actions remove that player from the game unless an effect is specifically preventing them from losing the game for having 0 or less life.

Combat damage is resolved during the Combat Damage step, where it is resolved all at once and without using the stack. Since SB-checks run before any player gets priority, any player whose life total becomes 0 or less as a result of combat damage loses the game if able. Those players do not get a chance to activate abilities or cast spells "in response."

Also, SB-checks collect a list of SBAs that must be performed, and then resolves that list simultaneously and without using the stack. If multiple players meet game-loss conditions, they lose the game simultaneously. One player doesn't die before the other during SB-checks.

Also, you can't even respond with Devil's Play since it is a sorcery.
