Does control mean everything in your deck or just cards in play(Graveyard, hand, exile, etc.)?

Can't find an answer anywhere, mostly due to the deck archetype of Control muddling the search results. I assume it's just cards that have been in play, and not your entire deck.

A player can control permanents on the battlefield and spells/abilities on the stack. Objects in any other zone don't have a controller. They just have an owner (the player who brought them to the game).
If an effect refers to a particular permanent type/subtype, such as "creature", "elf", "equipment" etc. and doesn't also specifically say something like "card" or "spell" then it's only referring to an object of that type/subtype on the battlefield.
If you have a more specific question about a particular card or effect, feel free to respond with more details and we can work it out.
