Do "can't cast spell" effects counter random casting?

Asked by Zacoly 10 years ago

My Wild Evocation causes me to randomly cast a creature from my hand. Or a creature I suspended finally gets cast for free due to i't suspend effect ending. Does my Grid Monitor counter these effects or not?

What's the outcome here?

If a resolving spell or ability gives you an impossible instruction, you ignore that piece and do as much as you can. If there's something stopping you from casting spells or a particular type of spell, any part of an effect that tells you to cast a spell of the disallowed quality does nothing.

Say you have Grid Monitor:

  • If Wild Evocation makes you reveal a creature card then nothing happens. The card stays in your hand and you move on with the turn.
  • When you remove the last time counter from a suspended Errant Ephemeron, nothing happens. The card stays in exile and you move on with the turn.

One of Magic's Golden Rules is "Can't Trumps Can":

  • 101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it cant happen, the cant effect takes precedence

If you reveal a creature spell with Wild Evocation while you control Grid Monitor, nothing will happen. If a suspend creature would be cast, the card remains suck in exile.

Thank you both - that makes better sense than countering the spell.
